Growler Internally Transportable Vehicle

The Growler Internally Transportable Vehicles are used by the United States Marine Corps as light attack vehicles to support expeditionary forces. The M1161 and M1163 are the only production tactical vehicles certified by the U.S. Military to fly in the V‐22. The Growler allows U.S. forces to take advantage of the Osprey’s 500 km/h cruising speed. Main role of this aerial-deployable vehicle is to operate in forward areas.

Features

The Growler is developed by American Growler company. Initial design was based on the drivetrain of the M151 MUTT jeep. The Growler was specially designed to be transported internally by the V-22 Osprey tiltrotor transport, however, it also fits inside the CH-47 Chinook or the CH-53 Super Stallion helicopters. Once the Osprey has landed, the Growler is ready to go within one minute.

Other features include:

  • four-wheel steering
  • central tyre inflation system
  • self-recovery winch
  • roll-over protection system

The baseline model is the M1161, it fulfils multiple roles. It can be used as utility, scout or fast attack vehicle. It is designed to carry a crew of four with sufficient supply of fuel, food, water and ammunition for a 3-day mission.

The other version used by the U.S. Marine Corps, is the M1163 Prime Mover. It is shorter and carries a crew of two. It tows either a mortar or an ammunition trailer loaded with 30 mortar rounds in enclosed containers.
