The Tactical Munition Dispenser munitions are a family of unguided cluster bombs. The TMD munitions include the CBU-87 Combined Effects Munition, the CBU-89 GATOR mine dispensing system and CBU-97 Sensor Fuzed Weapon.
The CBU-87 Combined Effects Munitions (CEM) is a 1,000-pound class submunitions dispenser designed to engage multiple targets grouped on a wide area in both conditions stationary or on the move. This dispenser carries 202 BLU-97/B bomblets, which are capable of destroying soft targets such as light armored vehicles or personnel. The bomblets can be freed at different selectable altitudes to cover a wider or tighter area.
The CBU-89 Gator is a 1,000-pound class cluster bomb containing anti-tank and anti-personnel mines. The anti-tank mines are triggered by magnetic sensors and the anti-personnel mines are triggered by trip wires. It is used to rapidly create minefields to deny access to a given area to moving ground forces or to immobilize targets. It consists of an SUU-66/B tactical munitions dispenser, 72 BLU-91/B anti-tank mines and 22 BLU-92/B anti-personnel mines.
The CBU-97 Sensor Fuzed Weapon (SFW) is a 1,000-pound class submunition dispenser designed to effectively engage and destroy heavy armored vehicles both stationary and moving. It consists of the SUU-66/B tactical munitions dispenser and 10 BLU-108 anti-tank submunitions. Each BLU-108/B carries four shaped skeet infrared sensing projectiles.
